Lewis Mumford - a series of films and discussions

Submitted by Sean68 on 14 August, 2008 - 18:29.

Lewis Mumford's series of ultra-rare and hard to find films are having an outing in West London over the next few weeks - anyone wanting to help create an imaginative and original response to the current mess capitalism is making of both our towns and cities should put this in their diaries. One of the organisers has this to say about the project:

Country Diary
In some ways people in cities live more ecologically than those in the country because of their more intensive use of resources such as land, shared facilities, economies of scale, lower dependence on cars, greater tolerance towards different types of people, and so on. Their separation from the countryside and lack of knowledge about it also has the effect that they tend
to leave wildlife well alone - and not hound it. And believe me, partly as a consequence, the wildlife is growing in the cities.
So while you ruminate on these points, put the following dates for "City Living as if People and the Planet Mattered" in your own country diary. This is a series of evening meetings about city life, how it was, how it is and where it seems to be going, in the context of the greater environmental challenges we are facing.
The meetings also present a rare chance to see Lewis Mumford's 1963 (b & w) film based on his seminal works about cities, culture, technology and architecture.
