A showcase of militarism and rampant imperialism of a hugely un-popular war......

There will be opposition and protests.....

It was was backed by unionists but opposed by the SDLP and Sinn Fein and now has to go before the full council next month for ratification.

What's the likelihood of this definitely happening?

Fuck yeh, a parade!

22 August, 2008 - 20:08

Im not too sure, but I think it will go ahead and unionists will get there way....
At least this might give the 'anti-war movement' a bit of a push....

22 August, 2008 - 20:10

i think the actual military might have something to say about it, they probably don't want to create such a spectacle for an unpopular war, despite the desires of unionists.

22 August, 2008 - 20:23

its been the military who has been requesting a parade. Interviews with both serving and RIR soldiers on leave stated their enthusiasm for some form of parade. Ballymena will be the first to hold a parade.

22 August, 2008 - 20:33

and then obviously the main unionist parties jumped on the bandwagon and pushed support for the parade through the newsletter of 'support our troops'. This is part of the 'normalisation' agenda too....

As far as I know the military have been encouraging these types of parades to try to improve public perception of the army, mainly because recruitment is continuing to be a big problem, although the economic downturn will probably turn out to be more useful than a parade.

'Anarchists call for mass opposition to military parade'

Responding to last week's controversial decision by Belfast City Council to hold a 'civic reception' and military parade in November for returning troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

Michael McGovern, spokesperson for the Belfast branch of the anarchist Workers Solidarity Movement states,

"This display and glorification of state terrorism at both home and abroad of rampant militarism, of a deeply unpopular and brutal occupation resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians should be vigorously opposed and prevented from taking place."

Furthermore, "It is also hypocritical of the main nationalist parties to oppose this parade considering their eagerness to wine and dine, and roll out the red carpet for their commander in chief George Bush and Tony Blair during their recent visit.”

In addition as anti-militarists, “this is a futile attempt to gloss over growing discontent within the army whenever morale and recruitment is at an all time low. We also call upon serving soldiers to disobey orders and refuse to be cannon fodder in the interests of imperialism, careerist politicians and generals."

No War, but the Class War!
