sometimes i'd like to get my hands on god
Religion in the USA
God is a nice idea. His existence would raise more questions than it answered. Atheism can be bleak.
I don't find anything bleak about not believing on God or a heaven, at all.
Makes me think more about the good things I have in the here and now and seek to give meaning to my own life.
Honestly, I don't find it bleak at all.

That's so sweet!
Hardly anyone thinks about the good things in the here and how or the meaning of/to their own life, whether they are atheist or not. And a lot of spiritual and religious people say they do those things but they don't. So atm it is you 1, them 0.

Some bizarre results have come out of the PewForum US Religious Landscape Survey.
I like how 21% of atheists 'believe in God'
Now that may be due to opposing organized-religion rather than 'god' per-se.
The results don't really help clarify exactly what people mean.
Could also be that some self-reporting atheists take the position sometimes called 'Einsteinian Religion' - basically atheistic with respect to the idea of a personal, interventionist, supernatural God (i.e. what most people understand by the term) but rather referring to a general awe and inspiration at the universe, cosmos, nature, and life in general.
Summary reporting here:
70% of those claiming religious affiliations believe multiple religions can lead a person to salvation, while 68 percent say there is more than one way to interpret the teachings of their religion.
57% of evangelical Christians say that multiple religions can lead to salvation, though nary an evangelical theologian or minister would be likely to say that.
58% of Catholics believe society should accept homosexuality, a view that is greatly at odds with U.S. Catholic bishops
The LA Times notes that Californians stood-out as less-likely to be religious, apparently cos of the 'corrupting influence' of Hollywood haha.
Generally, the results suggest, that while the majority (92%) of americans remain religious, and mainatin a belief in a god, their faith is somewhat malleable, lacks content-knowledge of doctrine, and for many, involves different interpretations of what seem to be clear terms.
Kinda superficial identifier these days really.
